Last year, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio aka Bad Bunny ‘King of Latin Trap’, returned to Puerto Rico for a historic, record-breaking residency titled ‘No mi queiro ir de acqui’ (I don’t want to leave here).
Spanning more than 30 shows at San Juan’s Jose Miguel Agrelot Coliseum, the residency attracted 600,000 fans and generated approx. USD$200 million For the island’s economy. His residency turned a slow tourism season into an economic boom, but more importantly, it gave his fans equitable access to his shows – the first nine dates of the residency were reserved exclusively for Puerto Rican residents. By leveraging his celebrity to spotlight Puerto Rico, Ocasio effectively rebranded the island as a global platform for music and creativity.
Although his music has taken him to every far corner of the globe, Ocasio still says Puerto Rico is his favorite place in the world. He is passionate about promoting local and authentic tourism across the island, wanting people to see not just the best parts of PR, but all of it. El bueno, el malo e el feo (the good, the bad and the ugly).
Puerto Rico A Caribbean archipelago and island that is an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it operates as a self-governing commonwealth where residents are US citizens, but they cannot vote for the president. And yet its location — about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) southeast of Miami, Florida — makes tropical Puerto Rico feel a world away from the continental United States.
When most people think of exploring Puerto Rico, they often think of the island’s colorful capital city of San Juan. But outside the centre, the north has pristine beaches, majestic mountain ranges and a unique Latin-Caribbean-African cultural history and environment. If you want to explore Puerto Rico through a bad bunny lens, here’s where to go, what to eat and how to dance:
